Illinois Superdelegates

With all the talk of superdelegates deciding the race between Clinton and Obama, I thought I'd take a look and see which way our Illinois superdelegates are turning:

Obama
Gov. Rod Blagojevich (IL)
Sen. Barack Obama (IL)
Sen. Dick Durbin (IL)
Rep. Melissa Bean (IL)
Rep. Jerry Costello (IL)
Rep. Danny Davis (IL)
Rep. Luis Gutierrez (IL)
Rep. Phil Hare (IL)
Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (IL)
Rep. Bobby Rush (IL)
Rep. Jan Schakowsky (IL)
DNC Constance Howard (IL)
DNC Margaret Blackshere (IL)
DNC Hon. Emil Jones Jr. (IL)
DNC Hon. Iris Martinez (IL)
DNC Tom Hynes (IL)
DNC Willie Barrow (IL)
DNC Michael Madigan (IL)

Clinton
DNC John Rednour (IL)

Uncommitted
Representatives:
Dan Lipinski (IL)
Rahm Emanuel (IL)

DNC Members:
Hon. Carol Ronen
Hon. Darlena Williams-Burnett

Members-At-Large:
Steve Powell (IL)
Edward Smith (IL)

Former DNC Chairmen:
David Wilhelm (IL)

Nat'l Dem. County Officials:
Hon. Margie Woods (IL)

Interesting how Emanuel and Lipinski are the only two who haven't committed. Political leadership at it's finest.

Update: Added more uncommitted missed in the list on first read. Hat tip to bored now.

Lipinski will probably endorse McCain, who is more to his liking than either Clinton or Obama.

Emanuel must be in a dither, which strong ties to both of them.  Who knows where he'll break .... probably with whoever looks most likely to win at the end.  If there's no likely winner, he'll probably keep his undecided posture until the convention.

Is that a complete list?  Aren't there more DNC members in this state?  Do only a percentage of them become superdelegates?

no, it's a great list, but it's not complete... (0.00 / 0)
so far, of the named "superdelegates," these illinoisians are also uncommitted:

DNC Members
Hon. Carol Ronen
Hon. Darlena Williams-Burnett

Members AtLarge
Steve Powell (IL)
Edward Smith (IL)

Former DNC Chairmen
David Wilhelm (IL)

Nat'l Dem. County Officials
Hon. Margie Woods (IL)

i would suspect that wilhelm would vote for clinton.

also, aside from the delegates on the ballot tuesday and these superdelegates named herein, there are pleo's -- pledged elected official delegates (there are 20 of these) -- and at large delegates (there are 33 of these) which won't be decided until may 5th...

Missed these at the end of that list.

lets get rid of the superdelegates (0.00 / 0)
they are the most undemocratic part of the primary system, and they might determine the nominee this year.  also, its probably the one change we could all agree on.

how would we go about this?  would national DFA help lead the effort?

Did the whole idea of super delegates (0.00 / 0)
Come about because of McGovern?  I kind of remember that. Gawd, I'm old.  Not old enough to have voted for McGovern, but still....

well, yes, but maybe not how you think... (0.00 / 0)
mcgovern used his knowledge of the democrat's rules, in which he helped revise after 1968, to gain the nomination.  i didn't read it, but it looks like the wiki article is comprehensive...

from the wiki article (0.00 / 0)
The Democratic Party has been criticized [2][10] for conducting its nominating process in a non-democratic fashion, since superdelegates are generally chosen without regard to their preferences in the presidential race and are not obligated to support the candidate chosen by the voters. There have been repeated calls to eliminate the superdelegates from the nomination process to more accurately reflect the popular vote. Percentage wise, 0.000007% of the voting population has 19.6% voting power in the 2008 Democratic Primary.

It wasn't McGovern (0.00 / 0)
And I was old enough to have voted for him.  It was in reaction to McGovern.  Read that wiki article,
After the 1968 Democratic National Convention, the Democratic Party implemented changes in its delegate selection process, based on the work of the McGovern-Fraser Commission. The purpose of the changes was to make the composition of the convention less subject to control by party leaders and more responsive to the votes cast during the campaign for the nomination.

These comprehensive changes left some Democrats believing that the role of party leaders and elected officials had been unduly diminished, weakening the Democratic ticket. In response, the superdelegate rule was instituted after the 1980 election. Its purpose was to accord a greater role to active politicians.[2]

The footnote is to this NYT story by E J Dionne from 1988.
The creation of these elite delegates after the 1980 election was one in a series of moves by the Democrats to moderate the impact of party reforms of the 1970's. The changes had the effect of diluting the power of elected officials to influence the party's choice of a nominee, and this, in the eyes of many politicians, helped lead the Democrats to defeat.

Wonder what Emanuel will do... (0.00 / 0)
since he owes his political livelihood to the Clintons. I hope he goes along with the will of his state, but we'll see.

IL-14 Rep? (0.00 / 0)
I understand next to nothing of this superdelegate stuff, but assuming Bill Foster wins the special election does he get added to the list? If so I wonder whom he supports.

yes... (0.00 / 0)
the actual number of illinois delegates remains the same, regardless, but (most likely) we'd have one less at-large or perhaps (less likely) pleo delegate...

Why not?... (0.00 / 0)
what's the reasoning, is Jim's question, IMHO.

i'm not sure she hasn't endorsed someone... (0.00 / 0)
obama, clinton, the man on the moon.  what i was trying to convey was that it had to be searchable for demconwatch to post it.  many of the endorsements come from obama or clinton's own campaign website.  some are from news sources or the individual's campaign website.  since i don't know if ronen has a website, or if she's even endorsed (personally), it's hard to say.  i will note, however, that some lgbt orgs are still mad at obama for having a "recovered" or formerly gay gospel singer open one of his events in south carolina.  so i wasn't exactly surprised.  iow, there are lots of possibilities here...

She has the superdelegate position... (0.00 / 0)
I assume, based on her DNC position, which stems from her Democratic State Central Committeeman spot (9th CD).

I don't have the 9th congressional breakdown here (I suspect bored can put his hands on it), but I'm guessing that the 9th CD went HEAVILY for Obama and, since the 9th is most likely the most predominantly LGBT district in the state, it seems as though holding out at this point for that reason, if bored really guesses right about my committeeman's reasoning, doesn't seem to be representing her constituencies, in whole, or in part.

[ Parent ]
let me argue the other side... (0.00 / 0)
yes, obama did extraordinarily well in the 9th, but that's not the only constituency carol ronen represents in the dnc.  she also represents lgbt democrats, and i'd argue that they are much more likely to be overlooked in the superdelegate department that democrats in the 9th cd (who have pledged delegates to represent them).

i'm not trying to be argumentative (in this situation), but i do think we need to look at this from all possible perspectives.  it is possible that, if ronen is truly uncommitted, that she could serve as an honest broker between barack and stonewall democrats.  a friend of mine, who was formerly with national gay and lesbian task force, argues that such a mediary is necessary.  in that case, she would be serving both constituencies...

Being a little closer to the situation... (0.00 / 0)
I think Jim's question is a valid question.  I know you are 'just supposin'' her answer, and you might be right, but it is her question to answer.

I know that when I chose delegates to fill an unfilled slate to the  Democratic National Convention that we had directions to take in to account all sorts of factors, including LGBT, to ensure diversity.  Of course, finding LGBT supporters wasn't so hard in that case, considering Paul Tsongas' record vs. Bill Clinton's, at that time.

I leave the argument about whether Barack supports the LGBT agenda to his out slate members, who can make the case better than I can.  As a double constituent, I still want to know what Carol's reasoning is.

[ Parent ]
i absolutely agree... (0.00 / 0)
since you understand the diversity mandate, and no doubt know about the several caucuses within the party, you understand my point.  just as you are a double constituent, she has a double (or triple, if you include the women's caucus) constituency here.  representing all these constituencies is one of the purposes of superdelegates.

it's funny, though.  after i wrote that, i thought, i should take the camera and go ask her...

david wilhelm "is set to endorse Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) this afternoon."

Obama's presidential campaign has scheduled a 1 p.m. endorsement conference call from Ohio, where Wilhelm was raised and now works as a venture capitalist.

so how come he's listed as an illinois delegate?  illinois has a set number, seems if he were added to ohio's delegates, we'd have another...

Don't know about Wilhelm's current residence (0.00 / 0)
I know that in 2004 he was working in Chicago as the senior partner in the political consulting firm of Wilhelm and Conlon. Where he was Kerry's state campaign chair, while Kevin Conlon was Dean's state campaign chair.
