Why I'm proud I voted for Thomas Castillo

Apparently Scott Lee Cohen has some personal issues in his past, something about holding a knife to his lover's throat about the time he was getting divorced. The police got involved. But the day after the woman was convicted of prostitution the woman failed to appear in court and charges against Cohen were dropped. So, since the charges were dropped it's not that big a deal, right? See Sun-Times (Chris Fusco, Dave McKinney, Abdon M. Pallasch and Steve Warmbir).

State Sen. Terry Link (D-Vernon Hills), one of the unsuccessful candidates for lieutenant governor, and representatives of the other candidates met a month before the election with representatives of the Quinn and Hynes campaigns to warn them about Cohen, Link said.

"We tried to warn the governor beforehand and they didn't want to listen to it," Link said. "He and Dan should have issued a joint statement denouncing this guy."

So, Terry Link lacked the balls to make the allegations about Cohen himself.

Link is too fucking stupid about politics to see why Quinn and Hynes wouldn't derail their campaigns to deal with Cohen.

And Link lacks the savvy to get the information to the media in a way that he wouldn't be connected (almost wrote "linked") to it.

And Link has succeeded in making himself part of a story that no sensible politician would want to be part of. And Link has succeeded in not only making himself part of the story, but making himself look cowardly, foolish and inept.

Carl Nyberg :: Why I'm proud I voted for Thomas Castillo

I'm pretty sure when the article says, and representatives of the other candidates it means the candidates who were part of the Springfield club (Link, Rickey Hendon (maybe) and Art Turner).

I don't see Link sharing the info with Castillo. I don't see team Castillo getting invited by Link and Turner to meet with the Hynes and Quinn campaigns. And if Castillo had the dirt on Cohen, I expect he would have pulled the trigger.

So... (0.00 / 0)
...what can be done now? Now that this stuff is public, can Cohen be pressured to step aside? And can we get the Michael Madigans of the world to understand that until we get public campaign financing, anybody with a few million dollars to spend will be able to buy himself a spot on the ticket?

"In order for somebody to win an important, major fight 100 years hence, a lot of other people have got to be willing -- for the sheer fun and joy of it -- to go right ahead and fight, knowing you're going to lose." -- I.F. Stone

Mike Madigan doesn't care... (0.00 / 0)
He's usually the "anybody with a few million dollars to spend", and he'd be happy if Quinn weren't around.

What was really depressing (3.50 / 2)
was that from my perspective very few of the Lt Gov candidates made any pretense of asking for my vote.  Cohen was the only one who sent mail to my house.  I heard radio ads for Cohen -- constantly -- and Link at the very end. Castillo I saw out there at more than one event, and seemed to be hustling as best he could with little budget.

No one else seemed to be bothering much.  Of course Cohen won: his campaign of "I know how to get people jobs and am doing it now" worked.  No one bothered to counter it.

Where Was Our Vaunted 'Press'? (0.00 / 0)
I find it impossible that somebody at the Trib or Sun-Times didn't have this before Wednesday. It doesn't sound like it took a whole lot of footwork to find out if it was true.

This state will eventually do something I thought I'd never do after 2000: vote Green.

See Brown's column in today's Sun-Times (3.00 / 1)
He reported it months ago because Cohan told him about it. But he didn't dig any deeper because he didn't think this pawnbroker -- of all things -- had the faintest chance of winning.

Who would have thought (0.00 / 0)
that the professionals would run such completely incompetent campaigns?

[ Parent ]
one more bullet in the argument (3.00 / 1)
That doing time in the Illinois General Assembly doesn't improve one's skill set much.

Wasn't Carol Moseley Braun chief deputy whip? And did that prepare her for the big leagues?

[ Parent ]
She ran a pretty good campaign... (0.00 / 0)
that wasn't really the problem.

[ Parent ]
I talked to a friend who helped out with the campaign... (0.00 / 0)
today and he said that the campaign sat down with a bunch of media early and told them 'everything' (probably not the 'prostitute thing'), and some of them wrote about it and some of them didn't.

I'm not excusing Cohen for his niavete (at best), but I'm guessing that the true problem is the cynicism and laziness of the press AND the electorate, including some here who saw some of them in person at the IVI-IPO endorsement session.

[ Parent ]
Cohen (0.00 / 0)
didn't show up at the IVI-IPO endorsement session, as I recall.

And why would you call those of us who spent two+ days at IVI-IPO endorsement sessions lazy?  Maybe I need to rethink the devotion of that much time to the process.

[ Parent ]
Actually, he was there, and was asked several times what... (0.00 / 0)
his business was, then, when he was less than forthcoming, someone in the audience said what it was.

If you took that as referring to you, it wasn't.

[ Parent ]
Ah, (3.00 / 1)
I must have repressed his speech. I remember Boland and Castillo well ... but perhaps my negative reaction to Cohen began then.

[ Parent ]
Cohen @ IVI-IPO (0.00 / 0)
I remember Cohen.

I remember feeling like he didn't offer a single compelling reason to vote for him.

I get why the media didn't think he would win. He seemed like a guy that lacked the ability to connect with an audience.

Remember, no one had any idea he was going to drop million until he said it in an endorsement session, I believe with the Daily Herald.

But aside from endorsing another candidate, which IVI-IPO did, what can the organization or its members do?

[ Parent ]
And, as we're seeing now, some people who spent a lot... (0.00 / 0)
of time agonizing over the Governor choice didn't realize how important the Lt. Gov. spot will be in what could be a close race.

If Cohen drops out, and is replaced with someone qualified to be Governor, I'm sure the Dems will pivot to how UNqualified the Rep. Lt Gov. candidate is to be Governor, and pound it from now 'til Nov.

[ Parent ]
should IVI-IPO have candidates answer Qs like (0.00 / 0)
1. Have you been divorced? Is your divorce record sealed?

2. What court cases have you been a party to in your life as a plaintiff or defendant?

3. Have you been arrested? Have you been charged with a crime? When? Where?

4. To what extent have you used illegal drugs?

5. Have you hired people to work for you or your businesses without checking their immigration status?

6. Have you used the power of government to get people preferential treatment?

[ Parent ]
But there are constant complaints (0.00 / 0)
already that the IVI-IPO questionnaire is too long.

[ Parent ]
They knew. (4.00 / 3)
They chose to ignore it.  No race was really covered other than Gov and Senate.  The press is officially useless.  You must go online to be informed about elections.

Update (4.00 / 1)
http://abclocal.go.com/wls/sto...

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn says he expects Scott Lee Cohen ultimately will have to step down as the Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor over charges that he once abused his girlfriend.

Quinn called Thursday for Cohen to answer all questions about his 2005 arrest for domestic battery. But Quinn says he thinks Cohen will end up dropping out of the race.

Illinois voters choose the nominees for governor and lieutenant governor separately. Quinn and Cohen did not campaign together, but now they make up the Democratic ticket.

Quinn says he learned of the allegations after Tuesday's election.

"In order for somebody to win an important, major fight 100 years hence, a lot of other people have got to be willing -- for the sheer fun and joy of it -- to go right ahead and fight, knowing you're going to lose." -- I.F. Stone

You made a mistake (4.00 / 1)
Mike Boland did have the guts to call out Cohen and the press ignored it.

http://www.bolandblog.us/news/...

Boland has the record of a progressive reformer. He was also one of the few state politicians who stood by Quinn over the years when Pat was out of power.  It's too bad Quinn doesn't remember who his friends are.  He could have a strong running  mate today if he had backed Boland instead of letting the party push Turner behind the scenes.  Quinn has no one but himself to blame for this one.

Where was Boland's campaign? (4.00 / 1)
I was close to voting for him, based on the IVI-IPO's recommendation -- but saw nothing from his campaign in the last month.  Nothing that counteracted any of the Cohen ads or mailers.  In the end he lost my vote because I didn't think he was taking the race seriously.

broke... (3.50 / 2)
boland has always been a poor fundraiser.  (disclosure: i've worked for mike in a prior election cycle)

"We have a lot of kids on the ground acting like adults and we have a lot of adults in this room acting like kids," President Obama told his advisors about all the infighting

[ Parent ]
well (3.00 / 1)
Cohen spent 2 mil of his own money.  Of course you saw more from him.

Yes, Boland has the same problem as many progressives.  He doesn't like to raise big money.  But he did work his ass off campaigning.

[ Parent ]
For the record... (0.00 / 0)
...Cohen also hustled across the state.  The job fairs he sponsored are likely to be copied by candidates from coast to coast in the coming months, regardless of what happens to Cohen.

Contrast the job fair testimonials for Cohen with say, Terry Link's radio spots (which had the Lt. Governor doing crossword puzzles, playing video games and sleeping in).  Absent these latest disclosures in the minds of the electorate when they went to vote on Tuesday, is it any wonder why Scott Lee Cohen finished first and Terry Link finished last?

[ Parent ]
I thought Link's ads (3.00 / 1)
were idiotic, considering that the last Lt Gov was Pat Quinn, who whatever his faults was not playing crossword puzzles as Lt Gov -- he was out there, going to military funerals, etc., and a pretty visible presence around the state.  So either it was a badly aimed attack on Quinn, or it completely ignored the voters recent experience with the Lt Governor's office.

[ Parent ]
Ads (4.00 / 1)
Cohen did have excellent ads and he ran them across the entire state.

Did you notice how the press adopted Link's narrative that the Lt. Govs office does nothing?  They could have written more about the candidates records, the Rural Affairs Council, Illinois River Coordinating Council, or the ideas candidates had for how to use the office.  But copying what everyone else wrote about it being a useless office until the Gov gets arrested is much easier.

[ Parent ]
Plus, he lives near Quad Cities, a pretty 'fur piece' from Chicago... (0.00 / 0)
though he should have figured a way around it.

[ Parent ]
Not enought to run ads on PSB? (4.00 / 1)
Quinn received thanks for advertising here, and the cost that I saw was on the low side. Why no ads from Boland or Castillo?

The Tenth Congressional District Democrats send out a weekly e-mail blast to more than 6,000 people. We take advertising, too! C'mon and join our party!

[ Parent ]
IVI-IPO endorsed Boland and we urged him (0.00 / 0)
to participate in our campaign effort.  It may not have beaten two million dollars of TV ads, but for not much money, he would have been prominently featured in our tabloid (photo and bio) which was not only the center spread in last week's Chicago Reader but also over 100,000 were distributed all over the greater Chicago area, through participating campaigns and our own network of volunteers at El and Metra stations.  Not so well known in Chicago, this would have, I believe, been helpful . . .  unfortunately he declined to participate, maybe because of the above noted money issues.  But things like that and Books Alive's suggestion would have helped.

[ Parent ]
speaking of ads (0.00 / 0)
I did like the IVI-IPO ads that ran on WCPT. Refreshing after listening to ads from Dr. Marshall and Scott Cohen.

[ Parent ]
Thanks, wrote it myself, and we got a few calls from... (0.00 / 0)
interested people who might get involved (or involved again).  And thanks for putting in the time with whatever you do at IVI-IPO.  It IS appreciated.

[ Parent ]
Missed a good chance to get his name out (0.00 / 0)
...he would have been prominently featured in our tabloid (photo and bio) which was not only the center spread in last week's Chicago Reader but also over 100,000 were distributed all over the greater Chicago area, through participating campaigns and our own network of volunteers at El and Metra stations.

Knowing that the Chicago Reader is widely available and popular with people who are likely to vote, it's really too bad he wasn't able to (or didn't)advertise.

[ Parent ]
This is why I find Link's statements so offensive (0.00 / 0)
Terry Link says he lacked the ability to get the SLC story out. He gave it to the campaigns of Hynes and Quinn.

Look, if Terry Link, Mike Boland and Art Turner don't know how to release a story online through various websites--not only do they not know, but the campaigns they assembled don't know--they are too fucking stupid to be lieutenant governor.

The reason SLC could get through the primaries was partially that Link, Turner and Boland were completely inept. They deserved to lose.

[ Parent ]
the link doesn't say anything about the 2005 arrest (0.00 / 0)
Maybe you meant to link to another entry?

[ Parent ]
That's the right one (4.00 / 1)
The arrest story was already known.  What Boland released was new.  The press ignored it all.

[ Parent ]
give me the quote from Boland's blog (0.00 / 0)
That raises a flag about SLC.

If Boland knew about the arrest, why didn't he come out and say it?

[ Parent ]
There's a reason why IVI-IPO voted to endorse him. n/t (0.00 / 0)
