When I (Ed Mullen) decided last year to run for State Representative as an independent and progressive Democrat, I knew it would be an uphill battle. In the months leading up to the election, I have knocked on ten thousand doors, earned the support of many community leaders, and feel confident going into the final stretch of the campaign. I wanted to take a moment to tell the PSB community a quick story about what we're facing today on the campaign, and I welcome feedback.
Yesterday, one of my opponents - Ann Williams - started distributing a flyer claiming (among other things) that I had represented the tobacco giant RJ Reyonlds in lawsuits from cancer victims. Let me state for the record, this is unequivocally false.
My campaign called the Williams campaign to ask them to stop knowingly distributing false information, and they denied that request as well as the request to allow me to speak directly to Ann Williams to personally ask her to stop this misleading tactic.
Now, I don't believe the voters in the 11th District will be convinced by a desparate last minute claim, but at the same time we want the voters to know the facts when making up their minds. We are looking to respond to the attack - and if anyone wants to come to the campaign office to tonight to help, we'd love to have you.
Thinking forward for future campaigns, I submit that we should be vigilant about standing up to these kind of attacks - take the high road but not let these attacks go unaswered. I would love to hear suggestions from the PSB community on how to best spread the word. I will check back in, but now I am heading out to knock on door ten thousand and one!
