Obama (hearts) LMad?

Looks like the entire WH is pushing LMad to run for Obama's Senate seat:

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan has met with President Barack Obama and his senior political aides to talk about running for the U.S. Senate seat he once held.

Ms. Madigan's spokeswoman says the meeting occurred in Washington at the White House late last week, with the Senate race the subject.

Ms. Madigan reportedly has not made up her mind, but the meeting came after weeks in which White House operatives reached out to Ms. Madigan and urged her to run for the seat now held by Roland Burris, and after Ms. Madigan said she would agree to think about it.

In the meeting besides Mr. Obama were senior advisor Valerie Jarrett and presidential Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel.  Ms. Madigan also talked with David Axelrod, who ran Mr. Obama's presidential campaign.

The attorney general "is still considering all of her options," the spokeswoman said.  "She is trying to figure out how she can best serve the public, and talking to the president is an important part of that process."

So what's keeping her from announcing?  Is it just for the drama build-up?

I'm loosing my appetite (0.00 / 0)
It quite something to paw everything in the fruit bowl and then dither about which juicy bit one might pluck.

That doesn't make sense? (4.00 / 1)
Alexi is a friend of Obama's and Durbin has been pushing him to run for the seat?  I could see Rahm's hand it this?

I know Thomas Castillo is running for Lt Governor.  It might be interesting to see Madigan run for that, until Quinn is done?

You mean that kid... (0.00 / 0)
...who couldn't get his name onto the 5th District ballot?  I believe young Justin needs a LOT more political seasoning before jumping into a statewide race!

The Dem line-up I see evolving (0.00 / 0)
U.S. Senate--Lisa Madigan
Governor--contested primary
Alexi Giannoulias
Pat Quinn

Lt. Governor--?

Attorney General--contested primary
Dan Hynes
Julie Hamos

Sec of State--Jesse White

Treasurer--Robin Kelly

Comptroller--?

President of Cook County Board--contested primary
Forrest Claypool
Toni Preckwinkle
Todd Stroger

Michael Madigan stays as Speaker and Chairman. Chris Kennedy can try for governor, comptroller or IL-10.

Problem with that line-up (0.00 / 0)
is that Gianoulis has already announced for Senate. I suppose he could switch, but it wouldn't look good.

all money raised under federal restrictions (0.00 / 0)
can be moved to a state campaign fund.

If the White House is courting Lisa Madigan for U.S. Senate, Giannoulias won't be able to play the Obama card very effectively.

Without the Obama card, what's he got?

Giannoulias' record as Treasurer vs. LM's record as AG?

Greek vs. Irish?

basketball vs. political progeny?

Giannoulias family ability to twist arms vs. MJM and Obama?

I don't see a viable scenario for Giannoulias to win U.S. Senate vs. Lisa Madigan, especially if Madigan has the Obama White House supporting her.

The other move he could make is to run for Comptroller while his lieutenant, Kelly, runs for Treasurer. That would make him a powerful figure in some respects. And if the GOP somehow captures governor then he'd be well positioned to run.

Any Democrat is fine in the Senate (0.00 / 0)
We already have strong liberal in Durbin. Any other dem will vote good enough. Alexi likely looks less progressive to the centrist Obama regime and plus he has a future. Quinn is at the end of his and will not likely go farther. LMad at senate means that dad can stay put. LMad's future: president after Obama?

Virginia had three in a row. (0.00 / 0)
For those of you who dozed off in your high school US History class, I am of course referrring to Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and James Monroe.  24 years in a row between them!

Amazing! You would have thought California... (0.00 / 0)
would have got one in the middle of that group somehow!

(Randall, what everybody else here will realize before you do, this is sarcasm.  I KNOW that California wasn't a state then.  That's my point.  It's much easier to have a run of three when there are only twelve other states.  I could go on, but, why?)

Lynn Sweet gets it right (as usual) (0.00 / 0)
Lynn Sweet points out that by agreeing to the meeting with candidate Madigan and making a great display of saying that he will not become involved in the Senatorial election, he effectively has become involved.

Alexi could get a federal appointment. (0.00 / 0)
I'm sure that President Obama could find a useful spot for Giannoulias in his administration (Assistant Secretary of the Treasury?  Ambassador to Greece?) that would go into effect in 2011.  Giannoulias can spend some time away from Illinois adding to his political resume, knowing his youth allows him to wait while others tackle the hard choices facing Illinois in the post-Blago era.

I can't see either of those posts (0.00 / 0)
representing a step up from Illinois State Treasurer. A full cabinet post might, but those seem to be taken.

...or at least that's what I've heard.

"In order for somebody to win an important, major fight 100 years hence, a lot of other people have got to be willing -- for the sheer fun and joy of it -- to go right ahead and fight, knowing you're going to lose." -- I.F. Stone

Aren't those reports of Obama's support coming from Lisa's people? (0.00 / 0)
I don't think it exists.
Later reports have O saying "no" to Lisa's conditions.
