from an email:

Today marks the fifth anniversary of the start of the war in Iraq.

We are proud of the work our fine men and women in uniform have accomplished in the field.  They have done everything we have asked of them.  We are forever indebted to their service and the sacrifice
their families have made.

Nothing would honor their service more than bringing them home.

bored now :: Bill Foster on the Anniversary of Invading Iraq
I campaigned on bringing an end to this war.  The people of the Fourteenth District want this war brought to a close and they want our troops responsibly brought home.  With nearly 4,000 lives lost, tens of thousands injured and more than 200 million dollars a day spent in Iraq, the American people have clearly stated that we have sacrificed enough.

"Those who stand with President Bush in opposition of change do so against the vast majority of this country.  It is time to lay down the partisan agendas, end the bickering and solve a very important problem.  It's time to bring our troops home

there are a number of vigils tonight around illinois marking the 5th anniversary of this dark date.  moveon is sponsoring a number, as well as local groups (there's a suburban southside vigil sponsored by the progressive forum).  join one, if you can...

"We have a lot of kids on the ground acting like adults and we have a lot of adults in this room acting like kids," President Obama told his advisors about all the infighting

what I would say (4.00 / 3)
We are proud of the work our fine men and women in uniform have accomplished in the field.  They have done everything we have asked of them.

This language seems wrong to me.

I would say,

Even in a just war, normal ethical people are put in situations that cause them to do horrendous things.

There have been individual acts of heroism by U.S. military personnel in Iraq. However, there has also been brutal treatment of Iraqis at the hands of U.S. military personnel. And there has been mistreatment of U.S. military personnel by their supervisors.

The senior members of the officer corps have been compromised by a dishonest war, led by an incompetent commander-in-chief.

Generals and admirals are somewhat politicians in uniform. And to get promoted in a Bush-led military, senior officers are expected to say dishonest things to bolster political support for policies that have no chance of succeeding.

Now, now... it's time to end the bickering.. (0.00 / 0)
Let's not fight over who lied to whom, who broke international laws, who tortured whom, who disappeared whom, nitpicking over 10,000 100,000, 1,000,000 civilians dead..

You need to lay aside your obvious partisan agenda, say "bring them home" nicely, like Mr. Bill, and, then,..
what? continue to fund the occupation in full next month?

Get over it, we need to come together.. etc. etc.

/sarc
..amazing how democrats cannot bring themselves to say the face-slappingly obvious...

What could Bill Foster say that you could ever be happy with? I think the answer to that is "nothing", since he is not the person you wanted to be elected.

Why do you consider yourself a Democrat if you hate us so much? Or do you? I suppose I'm not too clear on that. I'm also not too clear on why you insist on trashing Congressman Foster instead of trying to influence his agenda instead.

Do you think being insulting and rude will cause you to be heard more clearly? Bill Foster has been going to the area Jewels to meet constituents. Did you go and try to have a conversation with him? Or is it easier to come here and complain instead of discuss it with the person charged with representing you in Congress?

That's easy... (4.00 / 2)
1) The invasion and occupation violated international law, and the lies that brought these on are impeachable offenses
2) Torture, indefinite detention, disappearances, and spying on our citizenry are illegal and a violation of the oath of office, and impeachable.
3) If the solution is largely diplomatic and political, then it makes no sense to "listen to the generals on the ground" - the ones who got their promotions by telling BushCo. what they wanted to hear.
4) Make no further authorizations to fund this illegal debacle, other than an orderly pullout of 3-6 months..
5) Order the contractors and mercenaries out - cut their funding immediately.

The Dems, with a few notable exceptions, are unable to commit to any of these statements; they in effect support all the Repub premises on Iraq.

The Beacon News even noted that Foster's position on Iraq was identical to Oberweis.. the worst warmongers claim to "support our troops" and "want them home safely and quickly as possible" and "listen to the generals on the ground", etc.

If the "surge" is marketed to the American public as a "success" (aided in large part by the Dems going along with almost all of the Repub narrative), we stand a  good chance of having a President McCain in November.

What is rude and insulting is a Democrat telling me that outrage over Bushco.'s crimes and debacles is just so much "bickering" on my part, and that I need to get over  my "partisan agenda", and find "bipartisan" solutions to this mess. Unfortunately, the invasion, occupation, failure to hold this administration to constitutional and congressional oversight, and tolerance of criminality throughout the federal government is very much a bipartisan production. I, and most other progressives (and, learning the truth outside of rightwing spin, most of the country) want nothing to do with it.

Foster is completely aware of the arguments above, dismissed all of the above points in the debates with Laesch. He won't do anything to cause the Dem leadership headaches.
